The Parish Clerk is responsible for providing administrative, procedural and advisory support to the Parish Council, ensuring that council business is conducted lawfully, efficiently and in accordance with relevant rules and regulations. The role includes preparing agendas, arranging and minuting meetings, publishing statutory notices and council documents, maintaining the parish council website, handling correspondence, and supporting councillors in their duties.

The Clerk acts as the main point of contact for residents, councillors, Shropshire Council, local organisations and external bodies. Key responsibilities include coordinating responses to planning applications, reporting or following up highways and community issues, liaising with the police and local agencies, supporting parish council elections, and maintaining accurate records and contact information.

The Clerk is also responsible for managing the council’s financial administration. This includes monitoring bank statements, preparing the annual precept recommendation, maintaining financial records, preparing accounts for internal and external audit, arranging publication of statutory financial documents, managing insurance renewals, and completing required returns such as those relating to the Community Infrastructure Levy.

The role requires strong organisational skills, accuracy, discretion, good communication, an understanding of local government procedures, and the ability to work closely with the Chair, councillors, residents and external partners.

This role is unpaid and considered voluntary, this is due to the size of the Parish and the desire to keep costs low for the individuals living in the Parish. The council meet between 4-6 times a year with meetings last up to 1 hour maxium (typically on a Tuesday at 7:30pm) in which the Clerk would be required to attend. The responsibilites of the Clerk outside of attending the meetings are detailed above and expected to take between 10-20 hours on average throughout the year, these responsibilities can be done from home.

Ideally the candidate would be local to the Parish or Shropshire to avoid any long commute to the council meetings.
